01 Design and submission of MPA proposal
We aim to design and create a protective zone, namely the Magdalena Pelagic Reserve (MPR) and/or Magdalena Fisheries Refuge (MFR, i.e. Community-Based Marine Reserve) for pelagic shark and fish species and other pelagic fauna off the west coast of Baja California Sur.
Technical study
A technical study is developed based on the input and results obtained from the scientific work, and from workshops with different stakeholders.
Inform and socialize about the proposed MPR and or MFR with local artisanal fishers via workshops at fishing camps along the BMBA lagoon system. Also socialize the proposed area and the technical study with other stakeholders (NGOs, research institutions, tour operators, government agencies).
Review process
Any proposed area is reviewed by stakeholders through workshops and meetings with fishermen, researchers, conservationists, tour operators and government officials.
Meeting with government officials
Review project results and discuss potential conservation actions.
02 Communication and outreach
It is important to develop communications and outreach materials, as well as educational campaigns to inform and promote the conservation of sharks and the creation of a MPA.
Sharing the Shark Story
As part of this program we will develop educational campaigns and outreach materials to inform and promote the conservation of sharks and the creation of a the MPR and/or MFR. The following will be assembled:
As part of this program we aim to develop educational campaigns to promote the ecological and economic value of sharks, and to share information about the natural history, conservation, research, and challenges of a Shark Sanctuary.
A blog to promote the ecological and economic value of sharks.
Feature short video stories, documenting progress from the beginning throughout the project, with associated social media.
A short documentary of the new Shark Sanctuary (swimway) story and of shark heroes (fishermen that stopped fishing for sharks and now value the sharks alive).
